Laser Hair Removal FAQ
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal works by selectively targeting the hair follicle with an intense, highly concentrated burst of light. This intense burst of light heats the hair follicle to a controlled temperature, ultimately disabling future hair growth.
Am I a candidate?
Ideal candidates for laser hair removal have coarse, dark hair in locations that make you feel uncomfortable. State-of-the-art advances in laser technology now allow for the safe treatment of darker skinned or tanned individuals. Each individual's candidacy for laser hair removal will be specifically addressed upon consultation.
What areas can be treated?
With the laser targeting multiple hairs at the same time both large and small areas can be treated efficiently. This means that laser hair removal can be performed on virtually any area of the body including:
How many treatments are necessary?
Because the laser only treats the follicle of hairs in the active growth phase, more than one treatment will be necessary. While results vary, as few as three or four treatments, 2 to 3 months apart, may be all that is necessary to remove the majority of unwanted hair.
What are the possible side effects of this treatment?
In ideal candidates, side effects are extremely rare but may include mild skin irritation that may take several days to resolve. Consult with your medical laser specialist regarding the possibility of rare side effects.
What does the treatment feel like?
With each laser pulse the patient experiences a mild heat sensation on the skin's surface most commonly compared to the snap of a rubber band. In sensitive areas anesthetic creams or cooling devices can be utilized to minimize any discomfort.
What can I expect during the treatment?
A medical laser specialist will assess the area and explain the treatment to you in detail. Treatment times vary but can be as short as several minutes. Immediately following the laser procedure your skin may have minimal reddening that will resolve over the next several hours. Each patient will be individually advised if specific post-treatment skin care is necessary.
How much does a treatment cost?
The cost for laser hair removal treatments is highly individualized and is dependent on the area being treated.
