How to Prevent Dry Skin in the Winter

Snow days and hot cocoa are some of the best parts of the winter season. Dry skin isn’t. Low humidity, chilly weather and strong winds can cause the skin to become dry, fragile and itchy. After getting a chemical peel or microdermabrasion, it’s important to keep a consistent skincare routine to keep the glow from your treatment for weeks to come. Knowing where to start with skincare can be difficult, but at Faces Med Spa we’re here to share with you our simple and easy tips to prevent dry skin this winter.

Use a Hydrating CleanserUse a Hydrating Cleanser

Choosing the right cleanser can be overwhelming, but one of the most important things to keep in mind when picking one is to make sure it’s hydrating and it won’t disrupt your skin! We recommend a gentle cleanser with oat amino acids. This key ingredient helps to retain moisture and protect and smooth the skin. Obagi Nu-Derm® Gentle Cleanser is perfect for normal to dry skin types and treats dehydrated skin. This cleanser leaves your skin feeling moisturized and fresh and clears the skin of any oils and impurities!

Apply Alcohol-Free Toner After Cleansing

Skincare products with alcohol can strip the skin of moisture, leaving the skin irritated and dry. Alcohol-based products can also expand pores and promote greasiness. Toner is the perfect product for restoring your skin’s pH balance. Toners are often neutral or slightly acidic in pH, which helps to balance your skin after cleaning. The Obagi Nu-Derm® Toner pairs perfectly with the hydrating cleanser. After cleansing, use the toner to eliminate any excess impurities or dead skin and balance your skin’s pH.

Hydrate With a Humectant Serum

Humectant serums absorb water from the air, allowing the skin to hold in moisture. This type of serum keeps the skin hydrated and prevents skin from drying out.  Get hydrated AND rejuvenated with Skinmedica’s TNS® Advanced+ Serum! It’s perfect for all skin types and not only hydrates the skin leaving it silky smooth, but it also improves wrinkles, fine lines, skin tone and texture.

Lock in Hydration with a Nourishing Moisturizer

Dehydrated and dry skin can be combated using a nourishing moisturizer. It’s crucial to keep your skin moisturized throughout the winter months to avoid dryness and tightness, which can make the skin more vulnerable to infections and breakouts. Skinmedica’s Ultra Sheer Moisturizer is lightweight and will leave your skin feeling hydrated and enhance your skin’s overall appearance. This nourishing moisturizer will help combat dry and irritated skin caused by the winter weather, leaving your skin feeling smooth as butter.

Protect and Preserve Your Skin With a Daily SPF

Applying a sunscreen of at least 20 SPF daily will help reduce early aging. Implementing SPF into your daily skincare routine during the winter can prevent the skin from fine lines, wrinkles, discolouration, and even skin cancer caused by prolonged sun exposure. UV rays are still present during winter so it’s essential to protect your skin! We recommend Obagi Nu-Derm® Healthy Skin Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 35. It protects against UVA and UVB rays. It’s also important to wear sunscreen if you are actively using retinol. With the new skin cells formulated from applying retinol, it makes your skin more susceptible to sun damage.
